I found a recent post from Ted talk alum and dystopic author, Kate Messner.
Her article above is a very fine summary of futuristic world building. Her recent book Eye of the Storm places global warming at the forefront of her plot. The furious elements become in her narrative an intense disabler of human commerce, so much so that the Earth has become a foreign planet.
I love this idea. It’s both simple and a little inevitable and it borrows from the crisis mongers that abound on the talk shows. Not having considered weather emergencies as a plot devise, myself, I think I will look a little harder at that background theme for some future work. Thanks Kate.
